This Is Where Urban Legends Come From

Some friends of mine bought a bunch of plastic balls - the kind they have in play pits at fast food restaurants. They wrote silly fortunes, stuck them in the balls, and put them around campus.

One of the fortunes was: “you now have hepatitis.”

A campus security guard found it, read it, freaked out, and went to the hospital.

Dubious humor aside, it’s good to know our rent-a-cops have a solid handle on the basic facts of disease transmission. After all, these are the same people who send out bulletins whenever they see a particular “suspicious looking” black student on campus at night. One might almost suspect they’re not quite on the ball.
