Ugly Duckling Fabric Magic
So I finished my quilt top last night. Go me!
It’s not as impressive as I’d planned, what with the laziness and the scrap collection mysteriously short on colors other than blue helping to shrink it down to a small lap quilt with little overall pattern. It’s especially not as impressive after a peek at the Fiber Revolution, which naturally progressed to more peeks at Judith Reilly, Gloria Hansen, Judy Cuddihee (warning, contains non-eroticized quilted penises), Martha Sielman, and other “fiber artists” whose web sites were less rewarding.
The true beauty of a crazy quilt is one of process: scraps of the ugliest fabric EVAR find a place of harmony - or if not harmony, at least inoffensiveness. They do it by themselves, by magic, as the ragged edges are cut off and the sashing sewn on (I’m a firm believer in the magic properties of sashing). Planned, printed and painted quilts are fun, but they don’t exhibit magic properties of aesthetic self-organization. And they don’t prevent nearly so many fashion catastrophes!

I don’t know which is more fun — making a thing or having the finished thing around to play with. Either way, have fun with your quilt!
