Household Goodness

The second cure for blogger’s block: post some pictures!

We don’t strictly need more pot holders in the house, but they’re such a good way to make use of my crapped-out old socks that I might make more anyway. And I’ve been wanting a coin purse, so I made one of these. It turned out a little narrow for my taste, but at least it was quick, so it won’t be hard to make another one out of wider scraps.

Because I was so late getting my tomatoes in, I’ve only gotten three ripe ones so far, from that early-fruiting stalwart Stupice. They were no bigger than most cherry tomatoes, but given the amount of sun my yard doesn’t receive, I wasn’t expecting huge beefsteaks. The Roma gets more light, but is afflicted by a mysterious wasting disease (looks like verticillium wilt, even though the plant is supposed to be resistant) and I’m crossing my fingers for it to ripen its load before dying.

The landlady had the plum tree chopped down last week. On the plus side, this means my room gets more sun; on the minus, it means my view has changed from rustling green leaves to my neighbor’s ugly pasted-on balcony. And next year we won’t have any plums.

The pear tree has started dropping fruit, which means (accodring to the Internets) that it’s time to harvest. I picked what I could reach this afternoon, and the decent-looking ones are ripening on the kitchen table while the dubious got chopped up (carefully picking out the worms) and tossed in the pear butter pot.

And that’s all the news that isn’t! I am fighting the urge to infiltrate some excruciatingly tasteless things into your house… fighting… fighting… *exhales* OK, urge is gone. Mostly.
