x+-[^ ]*\.[a-z]{2,}

I've put some draconian new regular expressions on the comment blacklist. If you're here from, say, x-monkey.com, you're absolutely welcome to leave your URL, but you'll need to mail first so I can uglify my pretty little regex with a gigantic list of porn-ish terminology. Actually, this is the first time I've seriously sat down to work out this particular voodoo, so I apologize in advance for any other unintended censorship.

For other regex grasshoppers, try:

Aww Like Plant Kittens

New stylesheet, featuring one of my beloved potato-leaf tomato seedlings (try it here if you've got a style-cookie set) and I'm still feeling kinda nerdy, so I might try some more hacks tonight. Maybe everything will break, maybe it won't. WHOOSH!

8:56 PM Just installed the MT rebuild type mod. It's meant to improve commenting speed, mostly, by making MT smart enough not to rebuild everything every time I get a new comment. No noticeable improvements, but then again, ain't nothin' broke neither.

Whoa

Just added a bunch of horse-teenage-booger sex sites to the comment blacklist, and realized something: I've never gotten comment spam for goatse. No, I don't block on anything resembling "goat" or "tub".

What in God's name is wrong with the Internet?

hey look I’m trendy

Apparently tie-dye and ducks are mildly trendy among a small clique of livejournallers. Who knew?

Not me, at least not until I checked my actual referral logs and not just the sitemeter. Those krazy kidz have been pulling medium-sized jpgs off my server every time they reload their own pages during study hall. I'm not wholly satisfied with my automagically generated hotlinking-protection, but until I write myself a better set of .htaccess files, that's how it's gonna be. If you are scrambling your referring URL with some kind of cutesy software, no pictures for you!

Livejournallers, no pictures for you either until you upload 'em to your own server(s). And sweet jesus fuck please learn to spell.

Details

  1. Trip to the L.A. Arboretum leads to photoblog updates.
  2. I'm playing with the RSS - new RSS 2.0 feed includes comments! Old RSS 1.0 feed does not include comments, but has other crappy & useless metadata. And if you're reading this via RSS, won't you please say hi?

Broken

I don't like to apologize for being dull on the internet. However, I briefly thought of berating you, Dearest Reader, for being dull and avoiding the spout box. And I apologize for such dreadful thoughts!

It seems the spout box is broken. If you've sent me something via web-form in the past month or two, I'm not snubbing you, I just haven't gotten it.

I'll have a look-see about fixing it.

Nitrate Pumped Nabokov

Any spammer called "Lolita" ought to have the tongue-tumbling, somersault-through-rapids literary stylings of Nabokov. And they never do, duh.

There's a blacklist plugin coming tomorrow morning, hell or high water if you believe the entry title. I've gotten a few spam comments lately, nothing unmanageable, but trickles do become floods if one isn't careful.

Erasing Time

Water flows under bridges, leaves fall off trees, I hork my database with no recent backups, life goes on. I'll replace the past two months in the time-stream as quickly as I can, given that I've finally found a house to move into, they've started handing me actual responsibilities at work that make blogging under the spreadsheets a less enticing thought, and I've been infected with recall mania that requires a greatly stepped-up news reading schedule.

It's funny. I hate the recall - it's money bleeding through a weird loophole in California elections law, and all possible outcomes are ruinous. But there's a sense of exuberance about it. The minor candidate profiles are full of people running to satisfy quirky, pop-post-modern democratic ideals: providing a common-man alternative to Your Favorite Political Evil, fixing California's broken chi, getting increased exposure for the concerns of structural engineers, making self-referential documentaries about minor candidates in the California recall election. There are at least eight Ph.D. theses on political culture to be written, and enough human interest stories to fuel all the high school journalists in the state.

In my rational hours, I know we're all just relieved to tell "What'ch'oo talkin' 'bout?" political midget jokes, instead of "How many rocks can a one-armed Iraqi teenager fit in his pocket?" jokes. Other times, I think we're moving from bitter angry isolated cynicism, to happy participatory cynicism, to some baseball games and apple pie or something.

D’OH! System halt.

My web host has done more reconfiguring. From this point forward, the server will choke and refuse to parse any world-writable script it sees. Which is fine and sensible; however, Movable Type as I have it set up likes to output world-writable files, and I am not going to run around manually changing permissions on hundreds of archive entries.

I wish they'd tell me before doing things like this.

If you've encountered a similar problem (maybe you're just more security-conscious than I?) or you have a deep understanding of MT's file system arrangements for whatever other reason, please please email me. DO NOT attempt to leave a comment here, it will explode my tenuous band-aid.

Update: Things are sort of mostly working again, I think, after putting MT into a secure little wrapper. And breaking some stuff along the way, and fixing it again.

Virtual PHP Splode

So my host server was apparently reconfigured somehow, by nefarious forces in the middle of the night (or perhaps in the middle of the afternoon). Archives and miscellaneous features are all broken until I can make them work again. Boo.
